How Did Granite Become a House Sign?
Granite is either dug from the ground or cut or blasted from the sides of mountains. Granite is a very hard stone or rock. The act of removing the Granite is quarrying, when Granite is quarried it is produced in large rectangular blocks. These blocks can measure 6 feet by 6 feet which is a hefty weight , they can weigh up to 20 tonnes. Many examples of this rock can be found washed up on our coast especially, Devon, Cornwall and Scotland. Although the rocks you will find there have been shaped by millions of years of erosion.
Parallel Diamond Tipped blades are used to saw the blocks into useful size sheets because Granite is incredibly hard the process is deafening and can take days to saw each block.
The colour and grain of the Granite can only be seen once it gets to this stage and if it is badly flawed the who process would have been a waste of time.
Newly cut slabs are called scants, they are covered with saw marks and are pitted, it is only possible to see the true colour at this point by pouring on water on to the face of the scant.
The next step is for the scants to be polished, they are laid flat on polishing machines and rotary polishers with large spinning heads use different grades of diamond abrasives to polish the scants.
As each new grade of abrasive is applied the nature and colour of the Granite becomes more apparent, until the very fine grades are used which give the granite its highly polished finished look.
Granite can only really be deeply scratched by tungsten, diamond or high grade steel. It is exceptionally hard stuff. Granite is highly resistant to the effects of sun or rain but one substance which can stain it is beetroot juice although it would have to be on the Granite for some time before staining occurred.
